Learners weep uncontrollably at Ayakha Jiyane’s memorial service

The accused appeared briefly at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court and his case was postponed for further investigations.

AYAKHA Jiyane’s memorial service was cut short following the uncontrollable cries from learners after the school choir sang a touching song.

The heartbreaking ceremony was held at the Pinetown Girls’ High school hall.

Ayakha was described as a young woman who excelled academically and in other activities.

“The school lost a jewel, she was bright and was already preparing for her speech for her matric results as she knew she was going to be rated among the top learners in the province,” said school principal, Sibongile Njapha.

Earlier today, Lyndhurst Primary School also hosted a memorial service for its two learners, Ayakha’s younger siblings, Khwezi (Grade R) and Sphesihle (Grade 5).

The children came to school wearing black and the morning was well supported by parents, community members, the police, pastors and security guard services.

They went out to the streets with their placards despite the rainy weather and held a special ceremony afterwards.

The Wyebank Creche will also host a memorial service next Tuesday from 12.30pm for the youngest sibling, four-year-old Kuhlekonke.

The accused elected to stay behind bars and not apply for bail and the case was postponed to Wednesday, 9 October for further investigation.
