Kloof couple shares a special bond

Bill and Sally Pickering have been married for 60 years and are blessed with three children and six grandchildren.

THE Pickerings vowed to love each other forever and kept that promise as after 60 years of marriage, they are still smitten with one another.

The love they share is evident by the twinkle in their eyes as they talk about the wonderful years they have had together.

Bill and Sally were both teachers by profession but met during a badminton game in Zambia and got married a year later (18 August).

“She was good looking, I could not let a good thing get away and I was getting old,” said a very active 89-year-old Bill.

Sally was born in Zambia and Bill grew up in the UK. “It was just pure luck to be partnered with such a perfect husband, I could not wish for a better man. I truly love everything about him and sometimes I think he came all the way to look for me,” said Sally.

The warm and welcoming couple said they never had any reason to part, “we must be good for each other. When you truly love a person, you never get bored with one another as there is always a new interesting side to a person,” said Bill.

After having their first child, Sally retired and looked after the children. “My husband continued teaching, he taught for many years at Thomas More College and was a headmaster at the school. After retiring, he also did some locum work and offered maths lessons for free.

“Bill has a big heart which is one of the things I like about him, he is a good teacher and he can teach any subject,” said Sally.

Even though the couple have moved to the Greenacres Estate to relax, Bill said he doubts he will ever retire as his wife always finds something for him to do.

“He is an active man and always sees something that needs to be taken care of around the house, I have to be less active to keep the balance,” laughed Sally.

Bill and Sally are blessed with three children and six grandchildren.
