Future F1 engineers cultivated

Dozens of learners from across Durban will converge on The Pavilion Shopping Centre to compete for the top spot in the MAHLE Behr F1 in Schools event.

LOCAL learners in Grade 7 and 9 will gear up to design and engineer a car fabricated in paper (Grade 7) and composite material (Grade 9) in a live F1 in Schools event at The Pavilion Shopping Centre on Thursday, 22 and Friday, 23 August.

The excitement of F1 is brought to the classroom and challenges learners to contextualise their learning and knowledge in a creative, engaging and problem solving project where they must design and engineer scaled cars. These are then judged in a multitude of categories and then entered into a race to determine the ultimate winner.

This project has been undertaken by MAHLE Behr, in partnership with non-profit organisation, the Centre For The Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME).

“Bringing the excitement of F1 into the classroom is a continuation of our commitment to furthering science education among the youth, especially those in our fenceline communities. We are thrilled with the number of Science2Go schools that will be attending the finals,” said South Africa’s MAHLE Behr communications manager, Jolene van Heerden.

MAHLE partnered with CASME in the Science2Go project, a mobile laboratory that travels to schools in KwaDabeka, Molweni and Clermont to take hands-on science to more than 15 000 primary and high school learners, many of whom are entered into the MAHLE Schools Challenge.

The Mahle School Challenge (F1 in Schools), is made possible through partnerships with CASME, the eThekweni Municipality, The Pavilion Shopping Centre, Vodacom and Young Engineers.
