Exhibition showcases young women artists

#WomensMonth: Women showcase their versatility in various art mediums at recent exhibition.

HILLCREST’s Pablo Honey hosted its first art exhibition that featured a line-up of seven women out of the 11 exhibitors.

The show had an excellent turn-out with people of all ages streaming in to view artworks, vintage clothes, and garments by fashion designer Fekile Sokhulu, who has pieces that would impress any high-end fashion enthusiast. The impressive women-dominated line-up featured Fiona Kane, who had two large canvases on Pablo Honey’s dark green wall.

Fiona’s artworks looked like a permanent fixture rather than something that’s put up for an exhibition. Alongside Fiona, there was Jessica Steytler’s drawings which encapsulated the whole vibe of not only the venue of the exhibition but the young people who attended the event.

Two unforgettable pieces of work that caught most people’s eye upon entering the venue was Sam Taylor’s collages that worked beautifully well with the old film that subtly playing in the far left corner of the exhibition.

Sisanda Nxumalo’s, The Bold Type (her moniker) was displayed below Sam’s collages but in no way was she under anyone’s shadow. Her aesthetically-pleasing illustrations gave some of the tattoo-loving attendees some ideas to add to their mood boards.

Juda Gama, who’s delighted in seeing art close to his home said: “It was so much fun, I just observed how people were getting into the art and talking to the artist behind the displays.”

Aspiring photographer, Jade Fursman said: “I loved it, I was stoked to see so many female artists. It makes me want to put my art into the world.”

Other women artists who exhibited but were not able to attend were, Cape Town based, Daniela Klee and Emma Da Costa. The rest of the line-up featured illustrator, Liam Richards and Taylan Ayliffe.
