Under 60s star at sports event for #WomensMonth

More than 100 women, aged between 30 and 59, are set to take part in football, netball and athletic games in Clermont this Friday.

GROWING Healthier Gogos for Tomorrow is the theme for a unique Women’s Month sporting event that is focussed on women aged 45 to 60 years at the Christianenberg Stadium in Clermont on Friday, 23 August from 9am.

Packed with sporting activities, health awareness talks and traditional dance, the event is the idea of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) and Clermont’s Thandanini Gogo Support Group, which teamed up with KZN Municipality (KZN Sports) and the Clermont Sports Body.

At the kick off there will be a warm-up aerobics session. More than 100 women, aged between 30 and 59, are set to take part in football, netball and athletics to highlight healthy aging and help prevent chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and strokes.

Aged 55 years, Ningi Ndlovu is one of the competitors for the relay event on Friday. She is also the group’s volunteer gym instructor and also runs aerobic classes in the community after work.

HACT’s Gogo Support Programme manager, Cwengi Myeni, said, “Women between 30 to 59 face particular health and socio-economic pressures. If we do nothing, they will be a lost generation. Many sit at home, unemployed and depressed. Others face burn-out from years of overwork as sole breadwinners and carers. The impact can take its toll in mid-life, so we need to act now.”

“This year, by popular demand, we have extended our reach to include 100 women under the age of 60 who have, in the past, found themselves excluded from programmes and events that focus on youth or pensioners. They will compete at the event alongside 50 of their older peers for inspiration – gogos who are 60 to 80 years old.”

Visitors are welcome to spectate and show their support. Contact the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust on 031 765 5866 or email grannies@hillaids.org.za.
