Age is just a number for bowler Brian

The charismatic pensioner encourages others to take part in the entertaining sport of bowls.

AT 91 years old, there is no slowing down for Brian Standish who holds the record as the oldest member of the Lahee Park Bowling Club and the first person over 90 to take part in the Port Natal Novice Singles.

The Manors’ resident joined the Pinetown-based club just over a year ago and admitted to being slightly apprehensive to take on a physical sport at his age.

“I live next door to the competition secretary, Pierre Theron (21). While I was gardening I was told I needed to do something more. He persuaded me to join him for a game and I was a little bit nervous, but the team here is just so welcoming. It’s great!” said an excited Brian.

Brian moved to the area in 1986 and retired from a mining group shortly afterwards. He was an avid golfer but said the early mornings weren’t for him and gave it up as a sport.

He now plays bowls three times a week and, if there are social competitions, he is sure to sign up for those too.

“I don’t play competitively as I get a bit too apprehensive. The Port Natal Novice Singles were fun to take part in though,” he smiled.

When on the greens at Lahee Park, he feels deeply relaxed and at ease. “It’s an activity that any person can take part in. The game will almost accommodate you for your infirmities and the people here are terrific,” said Brian.

He is a woodworker and he made the wooden furniture in his homes, from TV cabinets to dining room tables.

His other hobbies include reading and woodwork. I do watch a bit of TV, I enjoy spending time in the garden and in the kitchen as well.

“I must admit that the food I end up making for myself is a bit on the bland side,” he laughed. “It was my wife, Lottie, who used to make the food and she was absolutely incredible at cooking and baking.”

Lottie and Brian exchanged wedding vows back in 1949 and welcomed two daughters, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren into the world.

“She passed away two years ago. She fell ill and I then became the cook. She was my only girlfriend. She is the only woman I ever had and it was a privilege to look after her before she passed,” he said, tears welling in his eyes.

“Since I joined the club, I am grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to welcome a whole group of new friends into my life,” he said.
