Pinetown couple blessed with 70 years of marriage

The family-oriented couple, Marie and Ken Wilson will be celebrating 70 years of marriage on Tuesday, 13 August.

THE number 13 might mean bad luck for some but the Wilson’s will forever cherish it as it has been a wonderful number among the family.

Ken (90) and Marie Wilson (88) got married on 13 August 1949 at St Paul’s Church in Durban.

They have a daughter born on the 13th and their first grandchild was also born on the 13th.

The family-oriented couple will be celebrating 70 years of marriage.

Ken first spotted Marie in 1947 when he was in the navy and saluting the King and Queen of England when they visited South Africa.

Two or three weeks later, Ken saw Marie again at the post office steps with groups of friends who were going on a picnic trip by train from Durban to Toti.

“I really thought that was strange, she was such a beautiful young lady and I decided to introduce myself and from there it has been a one-way ticket,” said Ken.

The couple said they are truly blessed to have stayed married for 70 years.

“The love for our children and family has played an important role in our lives and held us together. We were and still are an extremely close family,” said Marie.

Ken said being honest and truthful to your partner is important as marriage is not an easy thing.

When the Wilsons were asked about the qualities they love about each other, Marie said Ken is humble, honest and very loving.

“And I wash dishes,” added Ken.

“Marie has been by my side ever since, even during my caravaning days when I use to travel all over the country and she would always join me. I have also been very sick recently and she is always there, I try to repay her kindness whenever I can. Her love is a true definition of ‘through sickness and health’.”

The Wilsons are blessed with three children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grand children.
