5 reasons to refuse plastic: “Plastic bags? No, Thank you!”

#SinesSustainableSuggestions for this week includes tips on how to avoid using plastic bags when doing your monthly grocery shop as well as why this eco-warrior prefers brown bags.

Why do I prefer to use brown bags over the plastic ones? Because they’re 100% recyclable, compostable and eco-friendly.

Plastic bags are everywhere in our environment. When we go to purchase our groceries we use plastic bags because they are convenient.

However, the convenience of these plastic bags has come at a high cost to the environment and negatively affects human health.

Some cities across the globe and a few malls in SA have begun banning plastic bags already which is great considering all the negative effects of their usage.

Plastic bags are not easily decomposed and contribute to the degradation of the environment.

A plastic bag can take from 15 to 1000 years to break down depending on the environment.

This is why most plastic bags find their way to landfill sites, resulting in a huge pile of garbage that can be seen across the city and releases a foul smell which can be a distraction.

5 reasons to switch

I think it’s about time we make the switch from plastic bags to reusable bags and here are a few reasons why :

1. Plastics don’t only pollute our water but also our land

2. Plastic bags are made from non-renewable resources and this contributes to climate change

3. Plastic bags do not degrade

4. Plastic bags are harmful to wildlife and marine life

5. Plastic bags are harmful to human health
