Summerveld staff are armed with knowledge

The Making A Difference (MAD) project focuses on security and safety, thereafter life skills, general knowledge and social issues are addressed.

SUMMERVELD has launched the Making A Difference (MAD) project, for domestic workers, gardeners and grooms. The project aims to educate the staff on crime awareness, providing them with all the right emergency phone numbers, encourage networking and ‘getting to know your neighbour’.

Initially, the project focuses on security and safety, thereafter life skills, general knowledge and social issues are addressed.

The meetings are informal with refreshments provided and are facilitated by a translator if necessary.

Staff are awarded attendance certificates as the recognition of achievements is key.

The first meeting was held at Rosehill Stables and was run by Heather Partner. Partner said she was exposed to MAD project when she was living in Gauteng.

“It has been running for 18 years, and is an exceptional project,” she said.

The plans are to roll it out in KZN and Partner said they are thrilled to have started the project in Summerveld.

“We have to rely on the support of employers to allow their staff to attend the monthly meetings which last for an hour and a half. At the meeting we ascertained that not one of the participants had their security firms’ phone numbers and only three had access to a panic button. And yet these staff are often left in charge of properties and horses,” said Partner.
