Plans to bomb, rob safe in Pinetown foiled

The robbers were in the process of attaching explosives to a business safe when they were interrupted by armed response officers.

SWIFT response by police, Blue Security and a member of another private security firm averted an armed robbery at a business premises in Pinetown yesterday morning.

Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said the firm’s armed response officers and police arrived at the scene of the crime at about 1.30am.

“An undisclosed number of suspects targeted a business premises near the Pinetown taxi rank, where they cut the lock to the door of the premises to gain entry to the building. The suspects were busy attaching explosives to a safe on the business premises when an armed response officer arrived at the scene,” Mathios said.

“Members of various SAPS units, the K9 Unit and the Durban Flying Squad were dispatched and responded swiftly to the scene causing the suspects to flee the scene empty handed,” he said.

SAPS are investigating the attempted robbery.
