Malvern woman saves elderly neighbour during home invasion

The suspects fled the scene with a cellphone, a wallet and other valuables.

FOUR shots were fired at a Malvern woman by a gang of robbers after she disturbed a home invasion in progress at her neighbour’s home, yesterday, 25 July.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a gang of five armed robbers arrived at the Spence Road property at around 2.15pm.

“Four suspects jumped out of a vehicle and ran into the property. Two suspects accosted the resident in the garden and the other two suspects ran into the house. The suspects then took the 74-year-old resident into the house where they dragged him around as they grabbed valuables,” Mathios said.

“Meanwhile, a neighbour spotted the suspicious getaway vehicle parked outside and she pressed her security firm’s panic alarm. The suspect in the getaway vehicle noticed that she had spotted him and began hooting frantically to get the rest of the gang out of the house.

“The four suspects ran out of the house towards the vehicle and fired at least four shots indiscriminately in the direction of the neighbour. Fortunately, all the shots missed her and hit the wall of her house. No injuries were reported,” he said.

The suspects fled the scene with a cellphone, a wallet and other valuables.

Malvern SAPS and members of the local neighbourhood watch group attended the scene where four bullet casings were recovered.

Mathios advised senior citizens and people living alone to always ensure that they have a panic button or a mobile panic app nearby to call for help in an emergency.

“Even if you can’t afford to pay for a full security service to protect your home, consider opting for the minimal service of a panic button so that you can alert the company to dispatch an armed response vehicle or an ambulance to your property,” he said.
