Heath prepares for lifesaving mission

Curro Hillcrest's SPAR Star of the Month - July 2019.

CURRO Hillcrest’s Heath Westcott is an avid member of the Pirates Lifesaving Club and is the school’s SPAR Star of the Month.

The Grade 9 learner has been a Lifesaving Nipper for six years and has qualified as a junior lifeguard.

To achieve this qualification, he attended a week-long course with a practical and theory exam. After completion, Heath was also required to complete 30 hours of active duty to qualify.

Heath has represented Pirates at a provincial and national level in both surf and stillwater lifesaving, in addition to being an active duty member.

During 2019 he has also done duty as part of the water safety teams at the Midmar Mile, the KZN Nippers Champs, several Nippers carnivals and the recent Iron Man competition in Durban.

Pirates Lifesaving Club is, in conjunction with several other clubs around the country, resurrecting the sport of surf boat rowing, which is a traditional lifesaving event that is extremely popular overseas. The club is currently training a junior surf boat crew to compete at the next national champs, and Heath is very excited to be involved in this new aspect.

“We congratulate Heath on his wonderful, humble achievements and wish him all the best in this aquatic arena,” said the school’s marketing manger, Fiona Johnson.
