House robberies peak in Kloof

With crime on an increase, the CPF has shared some security for residents to be safe.

A RECENT CPF meeting revealed that house robberies and home invasions are at an all-time high in Kloof.

Kloof SAPS station commander, Capt Yoga Gounden, said in the meeting that 11 hijackings were reported in just over three weeks in June and two have have been reported in less than two week in July.

During the meeting, a drug problem was also reported at Wyebank schools and Gounden said police are following up the complaint.

According to Gounden, the house break-in pattern had changed. Most house break-ins used to occur between 7am and 4pm, but now they took place after 4pm.

Three suspects have been arrested recently, one with a firearm. It is alleged that they were involved in house invasions in the Penhill Road area. In one incident, a man was stabbed and robbed.

A firearm, 22 Magnum special, jewelry and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

CPF chairman, Colin Fourie, said there is a good working relationship with the SAPS and the CPF patrollers who are assisting the SAPS where they can.

“The local residents who are patrollers reported to have patrolled 830 hours in the last three months,” said Fourie.

It was also reported that remote-jamming is still occurring at the main centres and motorists are advised to always physically check their vehicles after locking them.

Security Tips from the CPF

– Check your alarm and panic buttons on a regular basis with your security control room.

– Make sure your domestic staff have a remote panic for when they are in the garden and know the Kloof patrollers response number, 076 082 9774.

– Make sure you have sufficient outside lighting on your property and install motion/heat sensor floodlights for additional security lighting.

– Do not leave security gates or doors open at any time.

– When leaving or entering your property stay alert. If, when returning home, there is anything or anyone suspicious near your driveway, drive on and contact your security company to escort you home.

– Have a safe room – a room with a secure door you can lock yourself in. Have a spare phone to save emergency numbers and keep it charged. Hide the phone where it will not be found by suspects.

– Take a photo of your vehicles, registrations and license discs. Take photos of sentimental and expensive jewelry, as well as the serial numbers of appliances such as TVs and save them onto your safe phone.

– Have a plan of action for your family should you have a home invasion. Make sure every family member, including children, know the plan and what to do.

– In the event of a home invasion/hijacking, stay calm. Try and make a mental note of as many details as possible of the perpetrators such as their height and build, language spoken, scars or tattoos.

– Layer your security – make sure your cameras are the highest quality you can afford and can record to a DVR so footage can be saved and downloaded.

– Beams let you know someone is on your property ‘before’ they get into your house, also install a microwave beam into your ceiling.

– Electric fences should always be connected to your alarm.

– Put sensors on your doors, windows as well as your ceiling trap-door.
