Àlufakwa – MEC Kaunda warns motorists ahead of Durban July weekend

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, assured the people of KwaZulu-Natal and visitors of their safety, saying that all security agencies have been brought on board to ensure the event is safe and incident free.

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, has issued a stern warning to all road users to respect traffic rules or face jail during the spectacular Vodacom Durban July 2019.

Àlufakwa, roughly translated means, don’t mess with the province/law enforcement officers.

The Department of Transport has already developed an integrated plan targeting strategic spots ahead of this horse race and fashion extravaganza. The plan will see the province adopting a zero-tolerance approach to all road users.

A number of multi-disciplinary and over-night operations have been planned and more personnel will be deployed 24/7 over the busy weekend.

The deployment of police and traffic personnel is part of ensuring tight security measures for the Vodacom Durban July and beyond.

Already the impetus of traffic enforcement has been emboldened by the arrest of 161 motorists for traffic violations in the month of June 2019.

Out of those, 71 were arrested for drinking and driving.

Commenting about the plan, Kaunda has called on all road users to adhere to traffic rules or face the music.

“The statistics from last month are an indication that we have taken a very tough stance against drinking and driving on our roads. Our teams have been deployed throughout the province to ensure that this weekend is safe and incident free. Those who will be caught will spend the Durban July weekend in police cells. The directive is very clear to traffic officers – have no mercy on people who are violating the law. As the province, we are very serious about saving lives of innocent people and we will continue with our radical approach against errant motorists,” said Kaunda.
