Rules about refuse collection outlined by DSW

Here are all the rules regarding refuse collection, from which colour bag to use for what rubbish, to handy numbers to call for extra services.

THE South Durban Basin ABM, in partnership with DSW Operations, plans to curb illegal activities at the DSW refuse site in Chatsworth.

Project leader, Irene Chetty, said after receiving numerous complaints regarding the misuse of this facility, a coordinated approach was required and site meetings were held with key role-players.

It was also deemed necessary to educate and empower the public for the use of this facility. The Chatsworth garden refuse site offers a convenient facility for residents in Queensburgh and surrounding areas to take garden refuse and recyclables.

According to DSW Manager: Transfer Sites, Ryan Papanicolaou, the facility permits residents to use it subject to stipulated conditions:

“Only garden refuse and recyclables are to be taken to the site,” he said. “The garden site does not take rubble. Residents need to transport rubble to the nearest landfill site.”

The rules for the use of the site by residents, for which there is no fee, is limited to one load a week with a load being a standard bakkie or Venter trailer size.

Self-loading is expected

Residents are also expected to self-load from their own vehicles into the skips on the site according to the directions given by the DSW staff.

DSW warns, however, that residents are not allowed to use the labour of vagrants to help off-load at the site and contractors are not allowed to use the site as it is only for residents’ use.

“Residents are also not permitted to give vagrants items they are intending to throw away or try to use the site after the closing at 5pm.”

DSW reminded residents that collection day protocols for refuse collection from homes are that refuse bags needed to placed on the verge on the day of collection.

“In the event of a family function, such as a wedding or funeral, DSW may be contacted on 031 468 3271 for additional refuse bags and collection,” he added.

Which colour?

Papanicolaou reminded residents that the colours of bags used for household and domestic refuse is black, recycling is orange and garden refuse can be put out in the blue bags bearing the DSW logo.

“DSW optional garden refuse disposal services can be set up by contacting DSW customer services on 031 311 8804,” he said reminding residents that they will need their utility account number to set up the Blue Bag Service Delivery Contract.

Other than bag delivery at your home, the blue DSW branded bags are also available at selected retail outlets with the retail fee including the cost of collection and disposal of the garden refuse.

“Blue bags are to be used for garden refuse only, they are collected on the same day as your black domestic refuse,” he said adding that DSW will only collect bags with the DSW logo.

Garden refuse bags can be filled with leaves, grass and twigs, but should not contain any paper, plastics, cans, cardboard or food waste.

The following number can be used by residents to report uncollected refuse or illegal dumping at the Collingwood Depot on 031 322 8214.

The garden refuse site can also be contacted with any questions you might have on 031 9036729. For the removal of dead animals contact 031 468 3271.
