Ruth Samaai Designs was born and started out as a female clothing brand. Fashion design is still at the heart of the label, however, the brand has since expanded into other areas that Ruth is passionate about including handmade accessories, illustration, stationery and home-wear such as illustrated cushions.

The mother of two said that Samaai is her maiden name and that is where her brand name came from.

“I have expanded my product offerings so I now cater to a wider market. My customer essentially is someone who appreciates hand craftsmanship and chooses style over trends and it is not limited to an age bracket,” she said.

What Ruth loves most about design is that it is an endless way to express yourself and that beauty can come from simple materials. “Design has also taught me to problem solve and to overcome obstacles in a practical way,” she added.

Ruth attributes her love for design to her mother, Gwen. “I come from a creative family, so late nights and messy work tables are happy memories from growing up. I work closely with my amazing mom in the business. She is a huge inspiration to me. She sewed my clothes when I was little and my bedroom use to have her sewing machines in it. I am grateful for my parents and husband Gareth for supporting me and believing in my ability,” she expressed.

When asked about what people can expect from her at the show, she said the pieces she will be showing are fresh, vibrant and all locally made. “I work with leather, fringing and a variety of beads. I will be showcasing a range my statement handmade accessories such as earrings and neckpieces,” she said.

A highlight on KZN’s annual calendar, this year’s show promises 10 days of non-stop entertainment with new show features including a bigger, better outdoor and lifestyle centre; a tiny home; a spotlight on Durban’s top design talent and a collaboration of the Home Grown Design and Food Fair complete with market stalls, craft food and beer and live entertainment.
