This day will be made possible with the help and collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality, South African Blood Services, Marie Stopes, Pink Drive and Lancet. “Good health enables people to live happy and fulfilling lives. This encouraged us to host this occasion through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals, by providing a positive impact on the lives of the youth, and adults of Durban” said Dr Thandeka Maphumulo, Durban Global Shaper and project lead.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 75 years old, for first time donors, weigh a minimum of 50 kgs and are in good health, you can donate blood on the day. Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly.

According to Janice Benecke from the Pink Drive, it is important to have breast examinations once a month on your own and once a year by a doctor.

“Early detection is key, we want people to know, as soon as possible to avoid harsh treatments like a mastectomy,” she said. The Pink Drive is dedicated to creating and promoting awareness about cancer in South Africa, and potentially beyond.

Visitors can expect these free services; cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, blood sugar test for diabetes, sexual health education, counseling and HIV screening, TB screening and general medical counseling.
