Join this Queensburgh family for a parkrun on this Saturday

Few five-year-olds can boast that they have already completed 50 parkruns. Daniel Cason can, because he ran his 50th on the same weekend as his 5th birthday! The Cason family has to challenged young people to join this week's parkrun for the Youth Day weekend.

FOR Queensburgh’s Cason family, Parkrun on Saturday mornings are a family affair.

“We have been doing Parkrun for almost two years now,” explained mum of three, Alicia.

“These days everyone is always rushing and working and our hands are always full running a household.”

The family has three sons, David (7), Daniel (5), who recently completed his 50th run on the same weekend as his 5th birthday, and Dante, who, at two, is still being carried some of the time, but will probably take to the running like a duck to water when he gets a little older.

Daniel completed his 50th run on Saturday, 1 June, at the Blue Lagoon venue.

“I really feel it is an amazing milestone for a five year old to have completed 50 5km runs,” said his proud mum.

Alicia, and husband William felt they needed to give their family some time away from the modcons and screens so prevalent today.

“Today’s kids are stuck on phones tablets and TV,” said Alicia who works at a pre-school. “So, we have dedicated our Saturday mornings to doing parkruns. It’s fantastic to see the children active, out there and moving.”

Alicia is also helping to organise a Youth Day themed Parkrun at the family’s ‘home’ parkrun, Durban Point.

“Hopefully the run on Saturday, 15 June will spark that passion in other children and parents!”

“It is surprising how many parkruns there actually are everywhere,” said Alicia.

“The first thing we do when going away for a weekend is check if there is a parkrun.” And, since they enjoy travelling, they have managed to complete no less than 17 different parkruns in different parts of the country.

Alicia also said the people at their regular Durban Point parkrun venue have become like an extension of their family. “What an amazing group of volunteers. They are always so passionate and friendly and helpful. It is always a treat to see our parkrun family every week,” said Alicia who is planning to begin volunteering too.
