Kloof learners talk the talk

The group of learners hope to jet off to New York in November to compete in the finals.

KLOOF High school entered the prestigious World Scholars Cup competition for the second year in a row and participated in and dominated the recent regional rounds at Curro Hillcrest.

Learners were required to study six subjects under the theme for the year, A world on the margins.

Topics ranged from unsolved mysteries of the world, neglected histories, marginalisation of social groups, enabling technologies as well as influential literature, music and art.

Kloof High had the largest delegation as 27 of its learners competed (nine teams).

Once again, they dominated the local competition and proudly walked away with many gold medals, trophies as well as the top nine positions. Many of the learners also excelled as top debate champions, writing champions and overall winners in the subject areas.

“Through their diligent preparation and superior performance, all nine teams qualified to participate in the second round of the WSC, the global round, to be held in six different countries this year,” said Kloof High School’s English subject head, Kristy Bricknell.

Durban will play host to one of the WSC global rounds this year and KHS plan to participate in the global round on home turf.

“Our goal is to qualify and attend the final round, the Tournament of Champions, at YALE University in November this year.
The WSC is a wonderful competition that is truly an enriching experience and offers our learners an opportunity to engage with topical social issues, develop critical thinking and broaden their horizons. We are so proud of the learners who participated and achieved greatness through much hard work,” said Bricknell.
