Hillcrest police warn of increase in house robberies

Police said having bushes around allows perpetrators to hide and wait for victims,

HILLCREST SAPS have warned residents to remain vigilant at all times as housebreaking and robbery cases are increasing.

“The community should avoid leaving equipment and items such as bicycles visible in their yards,” said Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith.

She said people should keep security gates locked if leaving doors open.

“Our theft rates are also on the increase as items are in full view and are precipitating factors causing perpetrators to come onto properties and take these items, including garden furniture.

“If doors and security gates are left open it allows easy access. Another tip is to try and keep the entrance to the property and fencing clear of shrubs and bushes for more visibility and lighting to entrances. Having bushes around allows perpetrators to hide and wait for victims,” explained Smith.

She warned people to always keep gates closed and locked when anybody comes onto the property even if they say they are officials.

“Residents should ask to see valid permits and credentials. You can even ask for a supervisor’s contact number at their office and verify that they are who they say they are and are performing official duties.

” If they arrive in a vehicle and it has no marking and looks suspicious, you can contact 10111 and report the vehicle. Don’t just open the door to anyone,” said Smith.

She added this information needs to be shared with children and domestic staff.

“Staying vigilant at all times can help prevent a traumatic incident,” said Smith.
