Protect valuables during Comrades, warns Hillcrest police

Tips to prevent theft out of motor vehicles during sporting / extra mural events.

WITH the upcoming Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 9 June and all other sporting events taking place in the Hillcrest area, police have urged the community to be vigilant and smart when keeping their valuables hidden or left at home and not in view in their parked vehicles.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith, said during the last two events, which were held in the area, there were cases where valuables were left in plain sight on the seats or on the floor in vehicles.

She said remote jamming is still an ongoing issue.

“It is advised that if people are attending events and do not require the use of laptops or other valuable items to please keep them safely locked up somewhere other than in their vehicle.

“Another issue we experienced was supporters taking their valuables and placing them in bags next to their chairs while watching the event and not keeping an eye on them while being caught up in the excitement of the event. Only realising when packing up that their items are missing,” said Smith.

She reminded the public the complainant has to now sign a declaration informing them that if any information comes to light that a false statement has been given, a case docket will be opened up against them and they will be charged for perjury.
