Hannah hits it out the park

Waterfall College's SPAR Star of the Month - May 2019.

WATERFALL College’s SPAR Star of the Month is Hannah De Chalain.

Hannah has a natural talent and the dedication to pursue her dreams on and off the sports field. The Grade 11 learner discovered her love for softball in Grade 4 and first made the KZN softball team when she was 12 years old.

“I love pretty much everything about softball,” Hannah explained. “I love the feeling you get when the team makes a double play and the awesome vibe from the team and how we all support each other. I also like the feeling of hitting the ball – it’s so relieving.”

She doesn’t restrict herself to just one sport and has also achieved KZN colours for judo and PADSSA for hockey. Since the start of high school, Hannah has focused on hockey and softball by playing for local clubs.

“Last year, when I moved to Waterfall College, I started doing a lot better with my sport because I was in a smaller environment and was coping better,” said Hannah. “I made the SA U17 softball team, as well as the SA squad for the World Cup in 2020. This year, I made the KZN Blitz Softball team. Softball is now my main sport.”

While Hannah is talented, it takes commitment to keep her skills sharp. “I spend time training every day, except Fridays when I go to Youth and Life Group at my church. I lift weights every day to strengthen my arm, then I practise my batting, go for a run and box every second day.”

What she isn’t on the sports field, Hannah enjoys spending time with her family and friends, enjoys playing the guitar and video games, and colouring in while she watches TV.

“Hannah is an amazing young woman,” said Waterfall College educator, Cindy Baker. “She has a wonderful work ethic and, despite her busy sporting schedule, always completes her assignments and studies hard. She is an inspiration, really. She had some crazy SA Softball trials on at the same time as Toastmasters and she still made it to every evening. She is a true asset to Waterfall College.”
