Drumming for conservation

Pinetown resident, Grant Halliday, a professional drummer and founder of the event, wanted to marry his passion for drumming with his love for conservation.

DURBAN Drum Day, an event supported by the Department of Arts and Culture and aimed at raising funds for animal conservation, will this year raise much needed funds for the Monkey Helpline on Saturday, 25 May at the Musketeers at the German Club in 7 Barham Road, Westville at 6pm.

Pinetown resident, Grant Halliday, a professional drummer and founder of the event, wanted to marry his passion for drumming with his love for conservation.

Halliday was contacted by the Department of Arts and Culture after they had seen newspaper articles about the event and asked to sponsor it.

“The first event we held had no budget and the drummers just came in to play their sets,” he added.

The event is free and locals can make donations of any amount towards the Monkey Helpline.

The Monkey Helpline responds to more than 1 000 rescue call-outs every year; many of these injuries are sustained during fights with other monkeys, dog bites, electrocution or being run over by motor vehicles. Durban Drum Day will soon introduce drumming in townships and the programme will teach and develop young drummers who will later also feature in the Durban Drum Day events.

Monkey Helpline founder, Steve Smit, said they are excited about the exposure local drummers will get on the day and that the community will be able to support a worthy cause like Monkey Helpline which relies on public donations.

The event will feature a combination of soloists, as well as bands and Lloyd Paul will the MC for the night.

“A huge thanks to Department of Arts and Culture for partnering me in this event especially Themba Mchunu and Thato Oliphant for believing in and supporting drumming in Durban,” said Halliday.
