Scammed Pinetown pensioner wants answers

Each time the Pinetown pensioner enquires about his money, he is told the case is still being investigated.

A PINETOWN pensioner, who was scammed of his grant, is not happy with the way his case is being handled as he has still not received his money, three weeks after the incident.

Andy Gobey said he went to the bank on Wednesday, 1 May to withdraw his money, but his card was declined.

“I went again the following day and received the same message. I then decided to go and query at the Ashley Post Office where I was told by the manager that a new card was issued on 15 April,” said Gobey.

Gobey said his money was withdrawn at midnight on 30 April.

“I showed the manager my card and was asked to fill in fraud documents. After a week I went back to find out the outcome, but was told that they are still investigating.

According to Gobey, five other SASSA card scam cases were reported at the Ashley Post Office.

“I have read that this is a syndicate but what worries me is that no one is giving us any straight answers. We need this money, fortunately for me my wife did receive hers, but still it is not enough to keep us going.

“There are many people who depend solely on this money; if five cases were reported here, I shudder to think how many people have been scammed the same way,” he said.

Gobey said when he reported the matter to the South Africa Social Security Agency he was told that he needs to refer the matter to Post Bank as they deal with electronic payment of social grants.

The Highway Mail asked Post Bank and SASSA for comment, but there was no response at the time of going to print.
