Durban police on high alert ahead of Nedbank Cup finals

People coming into the stadium will be searched for any prohibited items and such will be confiscated, warned police.

POLICE and other security agencies will be on high alert during the Nedbank Cup Final Competition between Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy on Saturday, 18 May at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Planning between the South African Police Service (SAPS), Security Clusters and the PSL has been on-going for weeks, said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman,  Lieutenant Colonel, Thulani Zwane.

A pro-active approach, which resulted in successful games being hosted recently, has been adopted for this event.

SAPS officers and personnel will be monitoring the situation in and around the stadium as well as around Durban to tackle the problem of fake tickets and resale of match tickets. The SAPS has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to fake tickets and the resale of tickets, added Zwane.

The match will kick-off at 7pm and is expected to finish at 9pm.

Police and other law enforcement agencies will also monitor the event to ensure that there is peace and stability.

Spectators and soccer loving fans with valid tickets are urged to come early as the gates will open at 2pm.

Prohibited items

People coming into the stadium will be searched for any prohibited items and such will be confiscated.

The public is warned of the following prohibited items:  Sharp instruments such as knives, firearms, glass bottles and alcohol.  Spectators are also urged to note that no one will be allowed onto the pitch.

Available public parking areas

Public parking areas around the stadium are available at R20: People’s Park East, Kings Park Swimming Pool and the Badminton Hall on Umgeni Road. Other options are Suncoast parking, Durban Station and Kings Park Stadium.

Zwane also advised motorists to arrive early to avoid congestion at the parking gates and to ensure that their vehicles are properly locked.

“Close all doors and windows and do not give your car keys to any stranger or car guards and do not leave valuable goods in the car,” he said.

Traffic management measures

There will be high visibility of police officers on the roads around the stadium to regulate and manage traffic.

The roads that might be affected include Masabalala Yengwa, Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road, Sandile Thusi and Goble Road.

Motorists are urged avoid the area around the stadium if they do not have tickets to the game. Road signage will be visible for parking.
