Marianhill boy (3) on ventilator following drowning

A young child who had allegedly fallen into the swimming pool at his home was rescued and given first aid by a neighbour until paramedics arrived to take over the life support protocol.

PARAMEDICS reported on Thursday morning that a three-year-old boy had drowned in a family pool in Holzner Avenue, Marianhill just after noon yesterday (Wednesday, 13 May).

According to Netcare 911 spokesman, Shawn Herbst, paramedics responded to a reported drowning in the suburb in Pinetown where a neighbour had rushed to rescue a 3-year-old boy who had allegedly fallen into a swimming pool at his home.

“Neighbours heard the splashing and cries for help and went to investigate, when they saw the child was submerged in the pool,” said Herbst. “The neighbour jumped the fence to rescue the child.”

Herbst said that by the time paramedics had arrived on the scene the neighbour had already started performing CPR.

“A full advanced life support resuscitation was initiated on the takeover and a pulse successfully regained,” said Herbst, adding that the child was then placed on a ventilator and rushed to a hospital for further treatment.

“Circumstances leading up to the drowning will be investigated by the Marianhill SAPS who were on scene,” said Herbst.
