#IMadeMyMark: Highway granny shares why her vote is important (VIDEO)

Home visits and special voting at many polling stations began on Monday and continues today ahead of voting day on Wednesday when all polling stations will be open between 7am and 9pm.

VOTERS are gearing up for election day on Wednesday, 8 May, as the IEC reports that all is in order for a smooth election process.

Val Dolby, 67, a resident at one of the Highway’s largest retirement communities, Flame Lily Park, in Queensburgh shared with the Highway Mail why she feels it is important to participate in the elections.

“I think it is very important for each one of us to place our vote for our country,” said Dolby on Monday.

The IEC has said it is all systems go for the process with the threat of strike action by permanent staff having been dealt with and very few problems on the first day of special voting.

The Electoral Commission announced at the Provincial Results Operations Centre based at the Department of Public Works Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville, on Monday just after noon, that almost all voting stations throughout the province opened on time at 9am for the province’s 102 453 special votes which had been approved by the IEC.

Of the 4 885 stations of in the province, only 332 did not open for special votes due to there being no applications for special votes in their vicinity.

“31,781 applications were approved for voting station visits and 70, 672 were approved for home visits and these will be administered on 6 and  7  May 2019. As a commission, we are pleased to report that all operations are going well and no major incidents have been reported,” said the office of the Provincial Electoral Officer, KZN in a statement issued on Monday afternoon.

“A minor incident of the voting station not opening in time due to the school assembly was also reported in Kloof.”

“Incidents that have been reported which were hampering our services and the opening of voting stations on time have all been efficiently resolved and operations resumed without any further delays.”

The IEC said it remains confident that operations will continue smoothly throughout the days of special voting.

Home Affairs offices are open for the processing of Temporary Identity Certificates (TICs) and issuing of Identity Documents ready for collection between 9am and 5pm.
