PHOTOS: Exciting Gogolympics are back!

The 9th exciting Gogolympics will take place on Friday, 26 April at the Molweni Sport Ground.

THIS year’s 9th Gogolympics takes place on a very special day where its founder, Cwengi Myeni, a sweetheart to many grannies in the Valley of a 1000 Hills, will celebrate her 76th birthday.

Myeni has spent many years selflessly serving others and has mobilised more than 2 000 grandmothers to form support groups in their areas.

The annual Gogolympics will be held at the Molweni Sports Ground on Friday, 26 April from 10am to 4pm and 12 teams will compete this exciting annual event.

The Highway Mail visited the KwaNyuswa Sports Ground last week Friday and found excited grannies who said they are geared up for the big day and looking forward to it.

One of the gogo’s who has been part of this event since its first began nine years ago, Anastacia Majozi (73), said being part of the Gogolympics helps keep them fit as they exercise regularly.

“My speciality is passing the ball game but I do play soccer if there is a granny that needs to be substituted.”

Majozi said she has four grandchildren to look after, “the two eldest no longer live with me as they are working far from home, but I am still left with two young ones aged four and five and this exercising helps me to keep up to them. We play games together,” said Majozi who couldn’t wait to get back to the field.

Myeni said the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust is always looking forward to hosting this popular event.

“This year, a team of mkhulus from Mid Illovo will make a special visit to compete for the soccer trophy. I will also be taking part in brisk walking,” she said.

The games will include soccer, netball, ring the stick, passing the ball, jukskei, ball kicks, board games and a relay.

The public is invited to watch and support the gogos and mkhulus.
