Wordsmith Daniella serves up winning story

St Mary's DSG high school SPAR Star of the Month - March 2019.

GRADE 11 St Mary’s DSG learner, Daniella Samouilhan, is the school’s SPAR Star of the Month.

She placed first in the Time of the Writer International Festival for her short story, The Mouse With No Whiskers, about a deaf girl.

The festival is held annually at UKZN to promote a culture of reading and writing. Daniella won a cash prize or R1 000 and book vouchers.

Daniella was placed first in the Grade in both Grade 9 and Grade 10 and top five in her Grade 8 year. She takes physical science, natural science and accounting as part of her subject package. When she finishes school she wants to remain in South Africa and work towards a career in either the business or a medical field.

Daniella is a talented tennis player and is a valuable part of the Saints tennis 1st team. Daniella and her sister, Leanna (Grade 9), recently placed third at the prestigious annual Waverley Tournament.

Daniella started playing tennis when she was in Grade 2. Over and above tennis, she enjoys fitness and strength training. During her high school years at St Mary’s, she has received a tennis merit award and junior colours, has been the U16 doubles 1st team tennis captain, junior singles A team tennis captain and the tennis junior A team captain.

“Daniella has been at St Mary’s since Grade R and says what she loves most about her time at Saints are her friends,” said the school’s marketing and communications administrator, Lisa Abbott.
