Queensburgh Harriers get techno savvy

Serving the community both as a social and competitive club, Queensburgh Harriers sees the future both in technology as reflected in its new website and in its development of young runners

QUEENSBURGH Harriers, often affectionately known as the #Burrarunners, have launched its new website and features all sorts of exciting updates to keep up with the fast pace of the times that have changed the running lifestyle to fit into the technology so many runners use today.

The club, which was formed in September 1979 to service the runners of the greater Queensburgh area, first met at Ridley Park Tennis Club, until it moved to the current home at the Queensburgh Sports Association in the early 80s.

Serving the community both as a social and competitive club, Queensburgh Harriers sees the future both in technology as reflected in its new website and in its development of young runners in the strong junior team which excels on track, cross country and even road events.

Annually, the club holds the popular Mineshaft 15 km Run/Walk in September which attracts runners from clubs far and wide.

Carl Hansen, the club’s spokesperson, said the launch of the new website is an exciting development for the club. “This is exciting as it links to our Facebook, Instagram, Strava and the race websites like eventtiming, ChampionChip, Finish Time and Racently,” he said.

“All races including road, trail, cross country and junior events will be on the calendar and linked to the actual event sites. With so many using step trackers and related platforms like Strava, the club is now up to date with even the most tech-savvy member.”

Seen recently on it’s Facebook page was the following post: “If you are on Strava come join our club. Open to all runners and walkers. Remember, “If it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen?” alluding to the common meme based on the phrase many who make use of the tracking social media site use in conversation with fellow runners.

The new site found at the URL, qbh.co.za is simple to navigate. “It makes it easy for people to communicate with their favourite club and even a has a list of committee members, what they all do, their photos and contact details,” said Hansen. “.

An additional feature on the site is the use of the digital payment option making payments to the club as simple as scanning a barcode with the Zapper smartphone app. “This has been done to make paying for subs or for the kit so much easier!” said Hansen.

Hansen said the club holds regular runs and training sessions. “Tuesdays and Thursdays the training groups run from the club at 5.30pm and usually do a 6 to 10km run,” said Hansen. “All ages and paces welcome for both runners and walkers.”

Time trials are held on Wednesdays and followed by a social at the club.
