MUNICIPAL rates rebates letters have been sent informing those qualifying for the discount to reapply by the end of next month to continue receiving a rebate.

First-time applicants are also encouraged to apply online for a rebate by downloading a form by the 30 April deadline. Visit www.durban.gov.za/Online_Tools/Pages/Online_Customer_Forms.aspx

“The municipality has issued rates rebate renewal letters to be returned and signed to the municipality by 30 April 2019.

Rebates are provided to senior citizens, the medically boarded, people with disabilities and child-headed households,” explained Ward 65 councillor, Samantha Windvogel.

Windvogel stressed that beneficiaries had been cautioned that the letters would be posted and there wouldn’t be municipal employees visiting customers in their homes to “help” them to complete the forms unless a specific arrangement had been made.

She quoted the city’s head of revenue management, Peet du Plessis: “Customers are cautioned to exercise vigilance during this period, as many fall prey to criminals who pose as municipal officials offering assistance.”

Du Plessis also said there is no charge involved in the submission of the forms for a rebate.

“When forms are submitted, customers should insist on being issued with a signed and stamped Acknowledgment of Receipt as proof of submission,” said Windvogel warning that customers who do not reapply for their rebate by the deadline date will see their rebates lapse from the end of June and will need to reapply from scratch.

“All beneficiaries who do not receive renewal letters by 15 March 2019, should visit the municipality offices with their identity documents or call 0800 311 11 11,” said the councillor.
