WATCH: Residents left in the dark as Mariannhill substation explodes

One of the substations at the power station is believed to have exploded.

MASSIVE flames and billowing smoke alerted authorities to an explosion at a power station on Wilshire Road in Mariannhill this afternoon.

It has reportedly caused a power outage not only in the Mariannhill community, but also surrounding areas, including Chatsworth, Pinetown, Northdene.

Ward 63 councillor, Chris van den Berg, said one of the substations is believed to have exploded and around 65 thousand litres of oil is burning.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this stage.

Firefighters have already arrived at the scene and is tending to the blaze.
