Siblings are in the swim

Palesa and Siphosethu Sibiya have both been commended for their outstanding performances in swimming galas.

THE Sibiya siblings, Palesa and Siphosenkosi, have taken to water like the proverbial duck and proved their talent already having garnered an impressive number of medals.

After participating in the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Schools Sports Association North Durban zonal swimming gala, Grade 1 learner, Siphosenkosi was commended for his outstanding performance in the butterfly discipline. He received a medal for first place.

Eleven-year-old Palesa has received KZN colours for her outstanding performance at the KZN Christian Schools Sports Association Gala last year and early this year.

In this year’s school gala, Palesa won the 25 metres for breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly breaking all last year’s records. She also won the girls 100m freestyle.

With Palesa being in the LSEN class, her swimming makes her parents very proud.

“This year she has chosen to focus more on her schoolwork and skip some swimming lessons as she knows she can always catch up on her swimming later. I must say her marks have really improved,” said the siblings’ father, Vusi.

Earlier this month, she was among the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Schools Sports Association KZN Swimming Team who competed nationally against provincial Christian teams from around the country.

She came second in 100 and 50 metre freestyle.

“Palesa started swimming at pre-school when she was four years old in the municipality’s learn to swim programme.

“When she started Grade 1 in Montclair, we were invited to a gala and her teacher said to us, ‘your daughter will make you proud today’ and we definitely were as she just swam right across the pool,” said Vusi.

“Swimming is not something they inherited from us, they are just talented. All three of my children, the youngest one being three-years-old, is also a natural in water.”

Vusi said they support their children and encourage them as they also attend swimming classes at Mini Seagulls in Cowies Hill.

The John Wesley learners also both enjoy soccer and riding bicycles and Palesa loves cooking.
