Update: Westville prison escapee to appear in court in May

The 32-year-old man was awaiting trial following his arrest for housebreaking and theft in central Durban.

NJABULO Lucky Mbatha, who escaped from the Westville Prison on Monday, was rearrested at the Durban Taxi Rank in a joint effort between detectives, Correctional Services and an informer on Tuesday.

Mbatha appeared in court on Wednesday on charges of escaping from lawful custody.

Captain Elizabeth Squires, communications officer for Westville SAPS confirmed that the 32-year-old man was set to appear in court on charges of housebreaking and theft in central Durban when he escaped.

According to Lt-Col Thulani Zwane, a spokesman for KZN SAPS, the man escaped while workers at the prison were busy with construction work.

He is expected to appear again in court on Monday, 6 May for the Durban Central housebreaking case.
