Show you care and support CANSA Shavathon

There will be eight Shavathon stations across the Highway area where you can either shave, spray, make a monetary donation or donate your ponytail.

CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s most compelling events and there will be eight stations situated across the Highway area for residents to take part and raise much-needed funds for the non-profit organisation.

Seventeen-year-old Liam Reddy, who has Ewing’s Sarcoma, encourages residents to support the worthy cause.

“I admire Liam for his resilience as, despite undergoing invasive treatments, he is a beacon of hope to all of us as he soldiers on. He does all of this with a heart full of kindness and a smile that depicts the spirit of this incredible young man,” said CANSA’s Janine Kyle.

Liam, who is in his matric year, cannot attend school as he is undergoing treatment. Liam and his mom, Pravashnee, want to create awareness around teenage and children’s cancer.

Pravashnee said that they have begun an awareness drive and need the community to know about donating blood and, more specifically, to register to become a blood platelet donor.

“It is vital that the community are aware of childhood and teenage cancer. CANSA has a programme called Tough Living with Cancer which is a children/teens’ support programme that embraces a holistic approach to include the emotional and social well-being of parents (guardians), children or teens and their siblings,” said Pravashnee.

Residents can choose to spray, shave or donate their ponytails. If none of these options are to your liking, you can always make a donation. The cost is R50 per adult and R25 for children under 12 years old. Funds received go towards CANSA’s care and support programmes for patients, caregivers and loved ones.

“There is a tangible spirit of togetherness as we make a stand against cancer. Cancer is not just a health issue but a human issue. We all know someone who has been affected by this disease and we are challenging the public to come and support this initiative.”

“This event is all about the community showing they care. It is awesome to see the volunteers who come forward to help shave and spray at the various events. I salute each and every person who gives of their time to be a part of our teams who run the events,” said CANSA’s Janine Kyle.

Shavathons will take place on 2 March at Westville Mall from 9am to 3pm, Sandy Centre from 9am to 1pm, Kloof Village Mall from 9am to 3pm, The Colony from 9am to 1pm), Christians Village from 9am to 1pm), Hillcrest Corner from 9am to 3pm, Watercrest Mall from 9am to 3pm) and at The Pavillion on 2 and 3 March from 9am to 7pm.
