John Wesley School gives to the elderly

The learners were asked to bring at least one item of food, clothing or a toy that they no longer use.

THE John Wesley spirit of giving prevailed again when the school donated food, toys and clothing to the Social Cause Charity Shop in Pinetown.

The learners were asked to bring a non-perishable item to school to bless and spread the love to someone less fortunate.

“February is the month of love and every year we ask the children to bring something for the people who are less fortunate while teaching them to give,” said marketing manager, Lilian Corden-Lloyd.

“We requested that each learner at JWS bring one item such as a bar of soap, a can of beans or any other non-perishable food item, or an unwanted item of clothing in good, clean condition, or a toy they no longer play with,” said Lilian.

John Wesley is one of the seven beneficiaries of the Social Cause Charity Shop. “Although we are not a charity as such, we were also chosen to be part of this good cause and why not do something to give back to them for the wonderful work they do,” added Lilian.

The clothes and toys will go to the charity shop and the food will be donated to The Elders Voice KZN, an NGO based in Amanzimtoti which took in and improved the living conditions of previously abused and neglected senior citizens.

Social Cause Agency have taken on the Elders Voice KZN as a project to assist more than 80 senior citizens living in shared homes in Durban.

“All they have is their SASSA pension and are battling to survive,” said Barbara Laubscher, owner of the Social Cause Agency.

She said they have tried to make the contributions manageable, something that most people can afford each month.

“John Wesley School has kindly taken this project to heart and have done an amazing job at collecting much needed groceries which will be handed over to the Elders Voice KZN. Often people don’t donate because they feel that their contribution will be too small, however, the message is that no donation is too small and with about 100 members in our club all donating two small items and some donating more than expected, we end up with a generous amount of food each month,” explained Barbara.

She added the donation from John Wesley School will give their collections a fabulous boost. “We are very grateful to John Wesley School for their kindness and thoughtfulness.”

The club is called the Elders Voice Centennial Club. People who wish to donate to the charity shop or be part of the Elders Voice Centennial Club can contact Barbara Laubscher on 082 306 1647 or email barbara@socialcause.co.za.
