Westville’s Eileen makes history
The local woman is the first person in South Africa to receive a 70-year badge for service to the Catholic Women's League.
EILEEN York, a 92-year-old Westville resident, is the first person in South Africa to receive a 70 years service badge from the Catholic Women’s League.
When the congregation’s standing ovation ended, Eileen took her seat in the front row at Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Westville, with a tear twinkling in her eye. She wasn’t the only one.

“The lifelong friendships I still enjoy, have added immeasurably to my happiness. Along with some campaigning and fundraising, and being able to help the parishioners with compassionate work like assisting at funerals, it gives a wonderful structure to support your parish priest,” she said.
