Fulton celebrates 60th milestone

Fulton School for the Deaf started its year-long 60th birthday celebrations recently.

LEARNERS, old and new, celebrated Fulton School for the Deaf’s 60th birthday with a heartwarming and fun-filled assembly recently.

The school set up a 60th birthday celebration committee and the talented group have come up with a year-long festival. The special assembly kicked off the celebrations.

The school’s acting principal, Bronwyn Bouwer, said, “You have arrived to an extension of your family; it doesn’t matter if you are here for a short time or a long time, it is this unique characteristic we want to celebrate this year.”

The learners were taken back in time with a Powerpoint reel of photos from when the school first opened its door, a picture that showed the Fulton family to learners using typewriters. Past learners and staff shared sign language videos regaling learners with their favourite stories from their time at the school.

Guests were encouraged to join in as learners jumped 60 times to celebrate the school’s birthday and the morning closed with the school’s choir performing a moving rendition of This Is Me.

The cake, decorated in the school’s vibrant yellow and blue, was donated by Zolita’s Couture Cakes & Confectionery in Hillcrest.
