Everton couple blessed with 70 years of marriage

David and Ruth Black celebrated their 70th anniversary on 3 February.

EVERTON couple, David and Ruth Black, may have old age health problems, but they still clearly remember the first time they met, 71 years ago.

The lovebirds got married on 3 February 1949 which makes this year their 70th wedding anniversary.

Ruth was working in the admin department at Cedara College of Agriculture in Howick when David, who had just registered as a student, asked her out.

“I believe it was his third day at the college when after supper, he asked if we can have a walk and that was the beginning of our love story. It was not love at first sight but we fell in love as we got to know each other,” said Ruth.

David saw Ruth through a window as she was working in the admin office. There were five women, but Ruth caught his eye although David said there was another chap who was after her.

“We were still young at that time and people thought we were crazy as we got married just after a year when I had to go back to my father’s farm.”

For Ruth, his good looks made her fell in love with David. “He is also a very clever man and use to fix a lots of things. He’s famous for his love of vintage motorcars and fixing them.”

When asked what advice she would give to youth about marriage, Ruth said, couples need to remain faithful.

“You always have to be faithful to each other, first and foremost. We did not always have the same interest but have always shared and discussed things,” she said.
