Sneddon Theatre-goers held hostage by protesting students

The students demanded accommodation from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

ABOUT 200 protesting students held up theatre-goers and cast at Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus on Friday evening.

According to Mike Myers, MobiClaw chief executive officer, the students brought the show to a halt, demanding  accommodation from the university.

He said two clients, who were at the show, alerted the control room of the drama at the campus.

Control room officers then immediately alerted the South African Police Service (SAPS) to the situation, Myers said.

The theatre-goers, many of whom were pensioners, were ushered into the change rooms for their safety ‘under very hot and humid conditions’, said Myers.

“After lengthy engagement the patrons were safely evacuated.”

“While attending to the alerts, numerous enquiries came into the control room from people who had family at the show and had heard there was trouble at the premises and wanted to find out if their family members were safe,” he added.

Myers said the clients and the SAPS updated them on the ground, which they were then able to forward to the concerned family members.

The incident, he said, was resolved around 10.30pm.

Updates to follow.
