Protect your pets against parvovirus, warns Kloof SPCA

Due to a spike in canine parvovirus cases, the Kloof and Highway SPCA has urged residents to have their pets vaccinated against the fatal disease.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA has experienced a high number of canine parvovirus (CPV) cases this year and urges residents to have their pets vaccinated.

“CPV is a highly contagious virus that affects any age, breed, or gender of dog. CPV is a life threatening disease and can be transmitted by any person, animal or object that comes into contact with an infected adult dog or puppy or faeces from an adult dog or puppy with CPV,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s manager, Barbara Patrick.

Due to the nature of the disease, the cost of treatment and the lack of care facilities, its clinic is unable to treat the cases.

Dogs will need to be taken to taken to a private veterinarian.

Patrick noted that it is critical to ensure all dogs are vaccinated. The SPCA offers a vaccinations at R150 per animal.

The symptoms of PVC include loss of appetite, bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and lethargy.
