According to reports, there was a heated argument between the taxi driver and the suspect before shots were fired.

ON Friday night, a metered taxi driver allegedly shot and injured a man who threatened him with a toy gun, as it was later discovered.

Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said the taxi driver was accosted while he was waiting to receive payment from a passenger at the intersection of Mariannridge Drive and Bushbuck Ridge in Pinetown. The incident occurred at about  22.43pm.

“The man approached the taxi driver and threatened him by lifting up his shirt to show him that he had a ‘firearm’. Several words were exchanged between them before the taxi driver fired two shots in the direction of the man, injuring the suspect in the abdomen,” said Mathios.

Netcare 911 paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital.

“It was later found that the man was carrying a toy gun under his shirt. It is unclear at this stage whether he intended to hijack or rob the taxi driver,” said Mathios.
