Durban municipality warns of illegal connection scam

Contractors must always display ID cards, wear red overalls and the company logo must be displayed on the vehicle, failing which they should not be allowed onto a customer's premises.

THE eThekwini Municipality had warned residents about a scam where people are duped into believing their electricity connection is illegal and are then intimidated into paying for the electricity to be ‘reconnected’.

Customers in various townships have been targeted by thieves.

They each receive a fake letter, allegedly from the municipality, that states their supply is illegally connected and it will be switched off and the cable removed if they do not pay their arrears.

The customer is requested to pay an amount, directly to them, so they will not be disconnected.

“While the municipality does send letters to customers who connect their services illegally, the public should be aware that at no stage should any payment be made to any individual in the field.”

“Payments to the city are only accepted at the municipal banking halls and cashiers in authorised centres,” said the eThekwini Municipality’s communications unit spokesman, Msawakhe Mayisela.

Customers are urged to contact the Electricity Customer Service Centres to confirm the validity of the job or to call the Contact Centre on 080 1313 111.

“Illegal connections are not only dangerous, but they cost the city millions of Rands each year, making it difficult to ensure sustainability of supply and roll out of service delivery. The city appeals to those with information to come forward,” said Mayisela.

To report illegal activity, contact the City Integrity and Investigation Unit immediately on 0800 20 20 20.
