Pinetown couple feed the homeless

Hoosein and Stephanie Amod have taken over Heaven's Kitchen under a new name, El Gibbor Kitchen 3610.

A SOUP kitchen which has been feeding the homeless people in the Pinetown area for the past four years is now under new management.

Heaven’s Kitchen 3610 was started by passionate Kayleigh Symes whose heart broke every time she saw homeless people with nothing to eat.

Kayleigh recently moved to Cape Town and has asked a loving couple, Stephanie and Hoosein Amod, who has the same goal as her, to take over.

The soup kitchen is now known as El Gibbor Kitchen 3610 (a Hebrew name which means ‘mighty God’.

The Amods started working at Heaven’s Kitchen last year August as volunteers. Stephanie said they were approached by Kayleigh to take over and they happily agreed as it is a cause very close to their hearts.

“We want to make a change in their lives, our aim is not just to provide them with food but to empower and give hope and love. Homeless people feel deserted, they need people to believe in them as they are in the streets for different reasons.

“Sometimes they don’t have a choice as situations are beyond their control,” said Stephanie.

The couple, with the help of volunteers, gather outside Tiger Wheels and Tyres in Old Main Road, Pinetown every Monday and Thursday from 6.15pm.

The soup kitchen is always in need of volunteers and people to sponsor meals as they feed between 100 to 180 people per evening.

“Depending on what we get, we provide them with sandwiches, full meals such as curry and rice, breyani or samp and beans,” said Stephanie.

People who wish to volunteer their time can contact Stephanie on 084 081 9130 or email SayHi@ELGibborKitchen3610.co.za.
