Cowies Hill couple celebrates 50 years of marriage

Cowies Hill couple, Janet and Charles Kett celebrated their golden anniversary on 11 January.

EVEN though Janet and Charles don’t always agree on everything, they have learnt to accept each other’s views and 50 years after they made a commitment to each other, are still happily married.

Janet was 17 and Charles had just celebrated his 19th birthday when they met in the UK in 1964.

The Cowies Hill couple moved to South Africa shortly after they tied the knot in the UK on 11 January, 1969.”We had already finished school at that time and were working.

We were both attending a wedding when we met and have been together since,” said Janet.

“His big smile and his ability to make me laugh made me decide that he was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He is quite, laid-back, generous and forgiving.”

Charles said without a doubt that Janet is his soulmate. “Like any other couple we do have our arguments but we have chosen to agree to disagree to make this a happy home, there is so much more that we enjoy together than to dwell on small arguments,” he said. After 50 years, Charles and Janet are still very much in love and enjoy spending time together as they play golf and go out to dinner at least once a week.

“The world is very different for our children nowadays, but young couples should work on their marriage. Marriage is a give and take and sometimes you have to give more to make it work,” advised Charles.

The couple have three children and eight grandchildren.
