Birds of a feather flock to Kloof

Head on over to the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve and unlock a treasure trove of birding knowledge.

CELEBRATE summer, begin a new and enriching hobby, and sign up for the Being a Better Birder course, in partnership with the Kloof Conservancy, at Krantzkloof Conference Centre, 152 Kloof Falls Road, Kloof on Saturday, 2 February from 8.30am.

The one-day course was developed for a specialist guide up-skilling programme and has been broadened and modified to appeal to a wide audience including teenage birders, tour guides, backyard birders and serious twitchers.

Course leaders, Professor Ticky Forbes and Nicolette Forbes, are both trained biologists who have lectured, worked and travelled their passion learning about the natural world.

Three interactive lectures will be given in the morning with active discussion and questions.

“The sessions will deal with birds in the world around us, cover topics including plant and animal common names and why they change and understanding the different families and groups of birds,” said Nicolette Forbes.

The lecturers will assist people to set up their phones so they can log the birds they see.
Booking is essential and participants will only need to bring a notebook, pen or pencil, and binoculars for the walk.

Individual assistance will be provided and a certificate of attendance will be presented as a record or memento of the course. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be available on arrival and mid-morning.

Registration is at 8.30am and the workshop will run from 9am to 3pm. Entrance is R200 for Kloof Conservancy members, R250 for non-members and R100 for juniors (under 18).
