New Germany neighbourhood watch calls for action

The Berkshire Downs neighbourhood watch has now joined hands with the Upper Lyndhurst community and are appealing for more residents to join them patrol the area.

BEING the ears and the eyes of the community is everyone’s responsibility as it helps reduce criminal activities.

To encourage people to become more proactive in the fight against crime, Berkshire Downs neighbourhood watch, which has now joined with the Upper Lyndhurst community, hosted a door-to-door campaign to create security awareness on Saturday, 5 January.

President of the Berkshire Downs neighbourhood watch, Marks Mthonti said the main aim was to encourage more people to join them with patrolling.

“We also shared tips with the community on how to try and not be victims of crime and what to do in case of emergencies. People also had a chance to share their experiences,” he said.

During the awareness initiative, Mthonti said three suspects were spotted in the area and when patrollers chased them, they dropped a bag which included house breaking tools and a toy gun.

“Within these two areas, we have about 140 households and after that awareness campaign, we had 10 people who joined our dedicated team of patrollers.

“I can proudly say, this campaign was a success and I would like to send out a special mention to Security On Call who responded to our invitation and escorted us throughout the day to ensure everyone was safe. A thank you also goes out to Andreas Mathios from Blue Security and everyone who made this a success,” he said.

The two neighbourhood watches have now joined and is now known as Berkshire Downs/Upper Lyndhurst Neighbourhood Watch. Contact Dumisani Ntuli on 082 375 8507/Mthonti on 074 316 1087 to be part of the watch or for more information.
