Hammarsdale mother arrested for attempted murder

Police are also investigating another case where a child was found dead at the suspect's home and was allegedly buried in a shallow grave some years ago.

PINETOWN Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit with Durban Search and Rescue, Pinetown Tactical Response Team as well as K9 members arrested a 30-year-old woman in the Mpumalanga area, Hammarsdale for attempted murder and child abandonment.

According to KZN police spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, police were alerted by an old woman in Georgedale who heard screams near her home on New Year’s Eve.

“A newborn baby was found and taken to hospital for medical attention,” she said.

Police then grew suspicious when rumours surfaced that the suspect had been pregnant with twins, however only one child was found.

Further investigations were conducted, which led police to discover small bones. The bones were taken for DNA analysis to ascertain if they are human bones and if they are linked to the suspect.

The suspect was later located at her boyfriend’s place of residence where she had her luggage packed with the intention to leave the area.

Mbele said the woman was immediately arrested and she will be charged with attempted murder and child abandonment.
