Kearsney College has a 100 per cent pass rate and a 100 per cent bachelor's degree pass.

KEARSNEY College achieved another set of extraordinary marks in the IEB results released today, with one boy on the outstanding list, another on the commendable list, two received 8 As and four 7 As, as well as a record 100 per cent receiving a Bachelor’s Degree pass.

Kearsney’s outstanding reputation for maths and science excellence was confirmed as half of the learners who wrote mathematics obtained distinctions and 39 per cent received distinctions in physical sciences. Kearsney has six boys in the country’s top 1 per cent in physical sciences.

The school’s Dux for 2018, Carl Combrinck, is on the outstanding list as he is in the top 5 per cent in six or more subjects, and achieved eight As, including 99 per cent for mathematics, 98 per cent for physical sciences, AP Maths 96 per cent, IT 95 per cent, Afrikaans 89 per cent, English 90 per cent, LO 93 per cent and life sciences 89 per cent. He received the school’s coveted trophy for best all-rounder, he was head of house, head of the acclaimed choir which won two gold medals and one silver at the 10th World Choir Games, and a highly competent sportsman who played 1st golf and second team cricket.

Kearsney’s Tim Bean celebrates his seven distinctions at home in Mauritius with his proud parents, Cathy and Andy.

Two boys, who were assisted at Kearsney through a bursary programme which supports boys who have been orphaned or raised by grandparents, have come through with exceptional results. Head prefect Phoka Mchunu received 5 As, for mathematics, physical sciences, isiZulu, history and life orientation. Sbu Sangweni, who played SA Schools’ rugby, captained the Kearsney 1st XV and contracted to play for the Golden Lions Rugby Union this year, received distinctions for engineering graphics and design as well as isiZulu.

Michael Lee and Jaryd Templar both received distinctions for Mandarin Chinese, making them KwaZulu-Natal’s first non-Chinese pupils to have achieved this feat. Mandarin is offered at Kearsney in partnership with the Confucius Institute in Beijing.

Kearsney’s headmaster, Elwyn van den Aardweg, said he was exceedingly proud of the number of boys who did well, with more than a quarter of the learners achieving four or more distinctions.

“For many years we have had a 100 per cent pass rate, and this year in addition we celebrate a 100 per cent Bachelor Degree or University Exemption pass rate. Our mathematics and science excellence programme continues to deliver incredible results, with this being the eighth consecutive year that distinction rates in these subjects are almost double those of the IEB average. Nearly half our boys achieved distinctions in History and two-thirds in isiZulu, EGD (Engineering Graphics and Design) and Mandarin Chinese,” said van den Aardweg.
