Pinetown resident pleads guilty to two animal cruelty charges

The chain around the dog's neck created a severely infected wound that was approximately 1.5cm deep.

AFTER two years and sixteen court appearances, a Pinetown resident pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 12 December.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Rossouw said the organisation was glad to have obtained some justice for Boyz, a GSD x male.

“The charges were for chaining Boyz in such a manner as to cause him unnecessary suffering, failure to provide shelter, withholding water and failure to procure veterinary treatment,” said Rossouw.

On 8 November 2016, inspector Petra Abrams was horrified to find Boyz at a residence in Pinetown on a  chain no longer than one metre.

“Boyz was left without water or shelter and the short chain was embedded into the skin around his neck, forming a noose-like raw, severely infected, open wound which was approximately 1.5cm deep around his whole neck,” said Rossouw.

Dr Mary-Anne Anderson, a veterinarian at the Kloof and Highway SPCA,  examined Boyz and advised that he be euthanased.

Inspectorate manager, Sue Noakes, said, “Boyz’ suffering and the extent of his wounds were  just too severe for him to be rehabilitated for rehoming, which saddened all staff involved as everyone wanted him to be given a second chance to experience love from an owner.”

The case was remanded for sentencing and a request for denial of ownership was submitted.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA staff thanked the public who brought the issue to their attention and to the public prosecutor, Mr  Mthethwa, who fought alongside the SPCA.
